We’re getting ready for the very end of Derry Girls, and the mastermind behind the series is contemplating what life after the comedy could be like for one character in particular.
DG creator Lisa McGee has just announced that while she’s not penning any more stories for our favourite Irish students, she does like the sound of continuing one story for the gang’s bane of existence - Jenny Joyce.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Lisa shared that while a spin-off is probably off the cards, she’s interested in where Jenny, played by Leah O’Rourke, could go in the future.
She explained: “I wouldn't do a spin-off now, and I have no plans to do a spin-off. I have all this stuff that's been put to one side because I wanted to finish Derry Girls properly, and put all my focus on that and do it justice, but those things have to sort of move up the queue.
"I always thought, just for my own amusement, there's something in Aunt Sarah and Ma Mary, and there's something in Jenny Joyce and her little sidekick Aisling."
For Lisa, she sees Jenny as “in a different show” entirely from the rest of the gang, which is why she’s so fun to write.
She added: “[Jenny's] like Beverly Hills, not Derry Girls, and I just love her energy. She pushes against the tide, most people on Derry Girls are on the same side if you know what I mean? Jenny's the opposite of that so she can change the direction of the show.”
While we’re all ready to tear up over losing our Derry Girls forever (or just for now it seems), there’s still a little bit more to look forward to after the final episode airs.
Fans will be treated to a very special extended episode after bidding farewell to our favourite Irish high school gang in the series three finale.
The episode, called The Agreement, will run over 45-minutes, and air in the same week as the series comes to a close.
The Agreement will take place one year after the events of the last episode, as Erin (Saoirse-Monica Jackson), Orla (Louisa Harland) Clare (Nicola Coughlan), Michelle (Jamie-Lee O'Donnell) and James (Dylan Llewellyn) get ready for the final year of school, but Erin and Orla’s upcoming 18th birthday party could be jeopardy as the Good Friday Agreement referendum threatens to overshadow the celebrations.
The gang have to get their heads around what the referendum result could possibly mean for them, and what the future holds as they consider life after school.
Derry Girls airs Tuesdays at 9pm on Channel 4, and you catch up on all three series on All 4.
