Sharleen Spiteri talks to Chris Evans at Virgin Radio

With Texas having released a new sessions album featuring stripped-back versions of some of their biggest hits, Sharleen Spiteri spoke to Chris Evans all about it.

The album was recorded with legendary American musician Spooner Oldham, and features 12 of the Scottish band’s best known singles, along with two cover versions.

Texas and Spooner Oldham: The Muscle Shoals Sessions was recorded at the renowned Fame Recording Studios. Talking about creating the LP, frontwoman Sharleen said: “It was really beautiful, just to be there. Especially with him, because Spooner is from Muscle Shoals, that's where he was born, where he grew up.”

Joining the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with webuyanycar, frontwoman Shaleen continued: “The thing is that Spooner doesn't tell you all his stories, you really need to press him. Like you’ll say, ‘What was it like working with Aretha [Franklin]?’ and stuff like this, and he'll be like, ‘Oh, I remember when we were doing this song or that song’ They were working out the backing vocals, and Aretha and her sister were messing around with ideas of how they were going to do the backing vocals, and suddenly they're going, ‘Sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me, sock it to me,’ like, taking the mickey. And they were like, ‘Oh, no, you should keep that bit. It's really good.’ Suddenly they're like, ‘Yeah, let's put that in the record.’”

She added: “And he's telling you all this, and it's being in a sweet shop for us. We’re going, ‘Tell us more.’”

Regarding where recording this album ranks in terms of special experiences, the singer said: “It's pretty special. To be honest, making any record is really special, because there's not a lot of people that get the opportunity to do it. And it's there, it can't be erased. it's there, you've made it, it's there forever. You'll be gone, you'll be gone for years after, like the people that we still listen to, and that person is alive because they've left this behind. It's extraordinary. It's an extraordinary catalogue of what you do. You’ve left a mark.”

The band are hitting the road later this year. Sharleen told Chris: “We're playing the London O2 in September, we're playing two Hydros in Glasgow. I mean, we're playing to a lot of people in September, and we're playing Cardiff and Leeds, Liverpool, Bournemouth,  Birmingham, all arenas. And the last load of years that we've been hammering it has kind of got us to this point, back in these arenas, so please come and see us.”
