With Grantchester series eight having come to a conclusion, its star Charlotte Ritchie is “saying goodbye” to her character in the next season.

The Ghosts star plays Bonnie, the currently-expectant wife of Reverend Will Davenport, played by Tom Brittney, who announced his departure from the show in 2023. For series nine, the official synopsis suggests Will is given a “life-changing offer,” that sees him debate his future in Grantchester

While chatting on the red carpet with virginradio.co.uk at the TV Choice Awards 2024, Charlotte spoke about the end of Tom and Bonnie’s time in Grantchester, and it seems the couple will be leaving side-by-side, allowing more room for incoming vicar Alphy Kotteram, played by Rishi Nair

Charlotte confirmed: “I leave with [Will]. There's a new vicar and he's so great. He brings a very new dynamic to the village. I think that's well needed.”

On saying goodbye to Bonnie, the Taskmaster alum described he own departure as “really sad” as she enjoyed working with “a lovely gang.”

“It’s always sad…but then you remember you’re so lucky that you had the job in the beginning.”

Series eight of Grantchester has thrown some serious challenges at Will after he's involved in a motorcycle crash which kills a man

“It’s a dark night for the soul of the vicar,” Charlotte explained. “Unfortunately, Bonnie is not around as much for him so he’s got to kind of do a lot of it on his own.”

Reminiscing about her time on the beloved cosy crime drama, the Call The Midwife actress shared: “I think it's a really lovely series. I love doing that show. It’s a particularly lovely cast and a lovely, very welcoming job. It's been a real pleasure to do that.”

One person definitely back for series nine of Grantchester will be Robson Green, who stars as Inspector Geordie Keating. Other cast members expected to make a comeback include Al Weaver as Leonard Finch, Tessa Peake-Jones as Mrs C, Kacey Ainsworth as Cathy Keating, Oliver Dimsdale as Daniel Marlowe, Nick Brimble as Jack Chapman, Bradley Hall as DC Larry Peters and Melissa Johns as Miss Scott.

Meanwhile, the future of the crime drama has officially been sealed ahead of the release of series nine. Read about it here.
