We've all had it, the dreaded moment you wake up to find you've strained a muscle or hurt yourself while sleeping.

Some of us manage to contort ourselves into weird and wonderful positions while snoozing, and a doctor has shared his thoughts of the best way to get some rest without doing yourself a mischief.

If you're a fan of sleeping on your front - you're not going to like this.Barefoot Rehab Clinic in New Jersey have been sharing the secrets of sleep on TikTok.

They have shared the best way to sleep to avoid injuring or straining your back.

Dr Joe lists the three ways most of us tend to lie on a bed, which are on your back, front and side.

For a relaxing night's sleep, he recommends sleeping on your back.

Front sleeping, also known as the 'free faller' pose, is the worst of the lot.

Dr Joe confirmed it adds extra pressure on your neck.

"We don't walk around with our head tilted to one side, so imagine sleeping like this for six to eight hours a night, how is your neck gonna feel?" he says.

Sammy Margo is a sleep expert and physiotherapist, she spoke to The Sun and agreed with Dr Joe.

She said: "Probably the worst position anyone can sleep in, this could leave you with a lifetime of back and neck problems.

"Your lower back bends in towards the mattress, which means it becomes hyper-extended, squashing structures and reducing the space in the lower back area, which may cause aches and pains such as sciatica, knee pain and cramps."

Front sleepers, it's time to try rolling onto your back for once.
