The Crown star Emma Corrin has said they hope the Oscars will bring in gender neutral categories in the future.
The actor, who identifies as non-binary and uses the pronouns they/them, said “I don't think the categories are inclusive enough at the moment.”
Corrin starred as Princess Diana in series four of hit Netflix drama The Crown, for which they won a Golden Globe and were nominated for an Emmy. Speaking to BBC News, the actor said they “hope for a future” in which there are gender neutral categories at major awards shows.
“It’s about everyone being able to feel acknowledged and represented.
“When it comes to categories, do we need to make it specific as to whether you’re being nominated for a female role or a male role?” they added.
As reported by the BBC, Emma said: “You can discuss awards and the representation there, but really the conversation needs to be about having more representation in the material itself, in the content that we are seeing for non-binary people, for queer people, for trans people, because then I think that will change a lot.
“When those parts come up, meaning more people and more actors are playing those roles then I think there will be more of an urgency with which these questions will be addressed.”
The BBC reports that the Oscars have indicated they are in discussions about gender neutral categories, while Bafta has said they are "engaged in proactive and thoughtful consultation on this subject".
Emma recently joined The Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky to discuss starring in the new West End adaptation of Virginia Woolf’s Orlando. The 1928 book deals with gender identity and was inspired by Woolf’s real experiences with lover and friend Vita Sackville-West. “There are amazing letters that you can read that [Woolf and West] wrote to each other, and they're so beautiful and so passionate,” they said.
“I think that it's sort of known and I think she, Virginia, writes about it explicitly that Orlando was based upon their forbidden love for each other, in being completely constrained and not able to have this relationship that they both wanted. Virginia poured out that into Orlando, which celebrates every kind of possibility.”
