Hollywood legend Tom Hanks is set to get grumpy in his upcoming new film, A Man Called Otto.

The first trailer for the new movie has just landed, and shows the acting superstar as the curmudgeonly titular character.

A Man Called Otto will see the Forest Gump, Big and Castaway star playing a recently widowed, set-in-his-ways grump. The official synopsis says: “When a lively young family moves in next door, he meets his match in quick-witted and very pregnant Marisol, leading to an unlikely friendship that will turn his world upside-down.”

The new trailer shows Otto going about his days, generally being annoyed by everyone and everything.

He visits the grave of his late wife, laying flowers and apologising for not being there earlier, saying: “The whole neighbourhood is falling apart these days.”

After a new family moves into the area, Otto later sits at the grave again and says: “Got some new neighbours. Nitwit husband.”

However, the trailer suggests that he slowly begins to thaw, making friends with the young daughters of the new couple, and accidentally adopting a cat.

The film, which is an adaptation of Fredrik Backman’s novel A Man Called Ove, also features Cameron Britton from The Umbrella Academy, Fargo’s Rachel Keller and Mike Birbiglia from Orange Is the New Black.

Christopher Robin and Finding Neverland’s Marc Forster will direct.

It looks to us as though this story is really going to pull at the heartstrings, so be sure to have some tissues handy when it comes out. As yet though, there is no confirmed release date.

In other Tom Hanks news, the actor has recently confirmed details of his debut novel. The book, called The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, is due out in May 2023.
