Strictly star Tony Adams has said sorry to his professional dance partner Katya Jones after dropping her, in an incident that brought back memories of when he did something similar to a teammate in his playing days.

Following the slip in training for the hit BBC show, the former Arsenal captain made reference to the time that he accidentally dropped his teammate Steve Morrow from his shoulders when celebrating winning the 1993 League Cup final.

Morrow had scored the deciding goal in a 2-1 win over Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley, but as the Arsenal players celebrated, Adams inadvertently dropped the goalscorer from his shoulders, breaking his arm.

Nearly three decades later, the football legend dropped Katya during rehearsals, following being saved from the dance-off by the public vote at the weekend.

Taking to Twitter, Adams said: “That was a little bit better – but a lot more fun. Thanks to everyone who voted for me – am trying my hardest to get it right, but at times I revert to type.”

In another tweet, showing a clip of the accident in rehearsals, he wrote: “Sorry Katya (and Steve. Still sorry after all these years…)”

In the clip, Tony lifts Katya onto one of his shoulders before losing his balance and swinging her into a dustbin. In the video, the words “Steve Morrow” flash up, with an arrow pointing at Katya.

Strictly saw its first elimination last weekend, when Loose Women star Kaye Adams was sent home, after she and her pro partner Kai Widdrington failed to impress the judging panel, or the public, with their Tango and Charleston.

Kaye and Kai were in the bottom two alongside Bros legend Matt Goss and partner Nadiya Bychkova, but the singer was saved by judges Motsi Mabuse, Anton Du Beke and Craig Revel Horwood.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6:30pm on BBC One.
