Fascinating news from the USA and a new study that’s revealed people who do sports at school are “grittier” and “work harder”. Say hello to Ohio State University, who analysed data from 4,000 participants to see how playing sports at school affected their later lives.

But how do you measure grit? That’s an interesting conundrum and what researchers did was to ask participants to rate themselves on a scale of one to five on questions like “I am diligent” - “I am hard working” - or “I never give up”. None of the questions were sports related, but the results were revealing…those who did sports as a youngster scored, on average, 11% higher on the grit scale. One in four scored low on the grit scale if they did no sports at school compared to one in six who did.

They also looked at the longevity of this sports related grit scale and discovered that people were positively affected by playing sports far into their adult lives. So, all that stuff about being “character building” when we were made to play sports that we may not have been 100% into, turned out to be right!

It’s not just us that’s having a sweltering summer as news comes in from Japan that a maternity clothes company have designed a dog suit with a built in fan, to keep mutts from melting in the heat!

Say konichiwa to Rei Uzawa, boss of Sweet Mommy, who noticed her chihuahua was really tired on its daily walk. Their recent heatwave has taken temperatures sky high, 9 days running over 35 and the high humidity there makes things really muggy when the sun goes down - over 25 degrees at night! The doggos are getting desperate. Experts have advised to keep them inside or walk them just before sunrise. So Rei designed a breathable mesh outfit with a little fan attached to it which circulates cool air around its body. Now her chihuahua and lots of other dogs are walking comfortably. Cool Dog as it’s called is also suitable for cats, they say, and with no sign of their heatwave ending, something cool for cats will be meowch appreciated ;)
