The much-anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed 2019 Joker movie has been confirmed, and director Todd Phillips’ recent Instagram post suggests that Joaquin Phoenix is returning.

The director shared a picture of the cover of the script on Tuesday (7th June), which showed that the title will be ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’. The red cover is dated 18th May 2022, and reveals that the script is written by Scott Silver and Todd Phillips.

And, importantly, a second photo on Phillips' post seems to confirm that the lead actor from the first film is back for the sequel. A black and white picture shows Joaquin Phoenix -who played the titular character - sitting reading the script next to a window, with a city skyline in the background.

Check out the two pictures here:

The first Joker film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, with two wins, including Best Actor for Phoenix. The star also picked up Best Actor awards at the Baftas, the Golden Globes, the Critic’s Choice Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Whilst there are no details of what we can expect from the new movie, the original focused on wannabe stand-up comedian and part-time clown performer Arthur Fleck, whose tortured existance leads to him inspiring a violent revolution against the wealthy in Gotham City. We can likely expect the follow-up to be similarly moody, dark and dystopian.

The title of the new film, Folie à Deux, translates literally from French as “shared madness,” and refers to a shared delusional disorder.

When talking about a possible sequel last year, Phoenix said: “There are some things we could do with this guy and [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”

In related new, Willem Dafoe has said that he wants to play a “Joker imposter” in a sequel. Read all about it here.

At this stage, no release date for the second Joker film has been announced.
