A week before the Oscars, the big names in film this year went head-to-head at the Writers Guild Awards 2022.

Apple TV+ drama CODA and Netflix’s Don’t Look Up were the big winners during the virtual event, which also celebrated the best writing in TV too.

Adam McKay’s script for Don’t Look Up won the WGA’s original screenplay gong, while CODA scriptwriter Sian Heder won in the adapted category. CODA is the English adaptation of French movie La Famille Belier.

Due to the rules of the Writers Guild Awards, lots of CODA and Don’t Look Up’s current Oscar contenders were unable to be nominated.

Awards season heavy-hitters The Power Of The Dog, The Lost Daughter and Drive My Car didn’t meet the minimum three requirements for the WGA nom despite being adaptations, but will battle it out in the same category on Sunday 27th March for the Academy Awards.

Elsewhere, Succession won best Drama Series, and Hacks picked up two prizes for best Comedy series and best New Series.

Kate Winslet's Mare of Easttown landed the best Original Long Form nod, while Netflix’s Maid bagged Adapted Long Form.

Meanwhile, there’s less than one week to go before the biggest night in film is here - the 94th Academy Awards 2022

The Power Of The Dog is by far the most nominated, with an astounding 12 nominations, including Best Picture and Leading Actor for Benedict Cumberbatch.

The Western will also be battling it out in the Actor in a Supporting Role category with both Kodi Smit-McPhee and Jesse Plemons nominated.

Next up is Dune, which has 10 nods overall. They are recognised in mostly creative categories, including Make-up and Hair-Styling, Production Design and Sound, and it did land in the coveted Best Picture list too.

Kenneth Branagh is no doubt elated at his semi-autobiographical epic Belfast getting nominated seven times, in Directing, Best Picture, and Actress in a Supporting Role for Judi Dench.

Other note-worthy mentions include Billie Eilish's Bond theme in No Time To Die, which is now the sixth song from the 007 franchise to be nominated for best Original Song. CODA star Troy Kotsur is the first deaf male actor to land an Oscar nod too.

The 94th Oscars will take place Sunday March 27th.
