If you’ve binged the first part of the final season of Ozark and are already missing the show, then you can at least get some more Ruth in your life while you wait for the second half to land, as Julia Garner is now starring in another hotly-tipped crime drama.
Garner, who is much-loved for playing feisty, no-nonsense Ruth in Ozark, is now taking on a true-crime role in new Netflix series, Inventing Anna.
The show, which landed on the streaming platform today (February 11th), sees a journalist investigate the case of Anna Delvey (played by Garner), who stole the hearts of New York elites. Oh, and she stole their money as well.
Anna Sorokin was born to working-class parents on the outskirts of Moscow, before reinventing herself as Anna Delvey, and then faking it until she made it, using her street smarts to defraud some of New York’s biggest financial hotshots. But did she end up flying too close to the sun?
The limited series was created and produced by Shonda Rhimes, and is based on a New York Magazine article by Jessica Pressler. It follows the story of how a journalist called Vivian Kent (based on Pressler and played by Veep's Anna Chlumsky) investigates the fraudster and seeks to expose her.
Julia Garner told Rotten Tomatoes that viewers might notice a shift in Anna’s accent throughout the series: “Her accent is as confusing to me as to you,” she said.
“She’s a hybrid of different accents. And it is true, her accent does change [depending on] how many Americans she’s around, how many Europeans she’s around. Her accent even changes like if she wants to impress somebody, you know, her accent changes when she lets her guard down and she gets a little more emotional. Her accent is consistently inconsistent.”
When speaking about whether Anna’s actions make her a con-artist, in the traditional sense of the word, the actor said: “Do I agree that it was the right way? No, I don’t agree that it was the right way. But I don’t know if I would call her a con-artist. I think Anna had an idea that she believed in, and if you want people to believe in you, you have to believe in yourself.”
The cast also includes Succession's Arian Moayed, Westworld's Rebecca Henderson, Scandal’s Katie Lowes, and Orange Is the New Black’s Laverne Cox.
