There’s a Cockney contender to be the 14th Time Lord, as bookies have now made Danny Dyer one of the favourites for the role.
Following news that he is leaving Eastenders, the odds have been slashed on the actor replacing Jodie Whittaker in the iconic role.
Bookmakers William Hill have him priced at 20/1 while, as reported by The Sun, Bookmakers Ladbrokes have him in their top ten of favourites, lowering his odds from 66/1 to 16/1.
Danny recently announced that he will be leaving Walford after close to a decade playing no-nonsense Mick Carter. Speaking on the Sorted with the Dyers podcast with his daughter Dani, he said: “I am leaving EastEnders. I'm very lucky, I'm very grateful.”
The actor continued: “When you're in a job like a soap, your contract comes up for renewal and every time it has they've asked me to say, and I'm very grateful for that. I've seen a lot of people come and go, it's very tough.”
He added: “The big news is I've decided not to renew my contract. That's all.”
Regarding being the next Doctor, he told The Star all the way back in 2017: “I think I could do it, easy. I’d keep my accent, too.”
As well as being known for starring in the long-running soap opera, Danny also hosts the popular Saturday night BBC game show, The Wall.
Speculation has been rife as to who will be the next Time Lord since it was announced Jodie Whittaker will be leaving the hugely popular show later this year, and while recent reports seem to suggest that The Doctor will once again be a woman, there are many names in contention to star.
Showrunner Russell T Davies, who wrote the amazing It’s a Sin last year, recently said that a final decision hadn’t yet been made as to who would be the next star of Doctor Who.
Bookies’ favourites include Lydia West, who has starred in the BBC drama Years and Years and, notably, Channel 4’s It's a Sin. Omari Douglas and Olly Alexander, who were both also in It’s a Sin, are being mentioned, but the latter has apparently ruled himself out, saying recently: “It’s not happening! I can tell you I’m definitely not doing it.”
Other stars that bookies are tipping include Michael Sheen, Michaela Coel, T’Nia Miller, Fisayo Akinade, and Richard Ayoade.
