The Sex Education star has joined the already notable cast of a new crime movie, The Pale Blue Eye, set to be released on Netflix late next year (2022).

The Pale Blue Eye is based on a 2006 murder mystery novel by Louis Bayard of the same name and is being directed by Scott Cooper, who has experience spearheading other crime films such as Out of the Furnace and Black Mass- starring Johnny Depp.

Cooper has already recruited the likes of Christian Bale, Harry Melling, Timothy Spall, Robert Duvall, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg and Toby Jones to the cast.

It was announced yesterday (1 December) that Gillian Anderson will be joining them, but it is not yet known what character she will be playing.

The plot of the film revolves around a veteran detective (Bale) who is attempting to solve a series of murders that took place at the US Military Academy at West Point in 1830.

He has the help of a young cadet called Edgar Allan Poe (Melling), who eventually becomes the famous poet we all know and love.

This is Bale's third collaboration with Cooper, and he will also be producing the movie with Josh Lesher of Grisbi Productions and Tyler Thompson of Cross Creek Pictures.

When talking about the plot The Pale Blue Eye, the director said: "Even though Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston and died, delirious, in Baltimore, the majority of his life he spent in Virginia, my home state.

"So I grew up in his presence. He bequeathed us the detective genre, and he's still such a presence in our culture, with every horror, mystery and science fiction writer indebted to Poe.

"This is my attempt at a large-canvas whodunnit, with a serial killer at its centre. I want to make films that push me into a different, maybe uncomfortable space, but I am glad to have Christian go there with me.”

A release date for The Pale Blue Eye has yet to be announced.
