There are few more divisive topics than whether or not pineapple belongs on a pizza. If you are firmly on the “no, pineapple definitely does not belong on a pizza” side of the fence, then you are probably going to lose your mind at the news that banana might be about to become the next big pizza topping.

Amanda Langard and her partner Ken Taylor, who run the independent Smashed Tomato Pizza business together, say that one of the most sought after items on their menu is a pizza topped with mozzarella, bacon, and… banana!

Smashed Tomato Pizza is located in St Ives, with the unconventional couple operating from a converted horsebox. According to The Metro, Amanda said about the unusual banana topping, “We get a lot of people who say they think it’s weird, but if we can convince them to try it, they love it.

“We normally switch up our menu every week, but the banana and bacon one is permanently on the menu because it’s our most popular dish.”

The inspiration for the bacon and banana pizza came from Amanda’s trips to South Africa as a child, where it’s more common to have a banana and bacon combo.

When posting a photo on Smashed Tomato Pizza’s Instagram page, Amanda said of the banana and bacon pizza, “This is my favourite. Add a drizzle of BBQ sauce too and it is a taste sensation.”

One commenter replied, “I'll have to pay you a visit sometime so you can convince me!”

Another wasn’t so sure, saying, “Your pizzas look deeeelish, but I’m not convinced about banana, Amanda.”

There is also a dessert-style pizza on the Smashed Tomato Pizza menu, which has banana topping on a caramel base.

Italian football fans displayed banners at Euro 2020 saying, “Stop Putting Pineapple on Pizza”. Goodness knows what they’ll make of the new banana pizza topping sensation that might just be about to sweep the UK!
