It’s fair to say that Harry Kane’s goal in the closing minutes of England’s epic match against Germany in the Euros sent the entire country into wild celebrations. Whether in the stadium, in pubs, or in living rooms, when the ball hit the net to put the Three Lions 2-0 up, we all went nuts!
Indeed, one fan’s celebrations were so extreme that he somehow managed to wreck his own glasses. Brentford supporter Billy Taylor tweeted, “Off to @Specsavers tomorrow thanks to @HKane,” along with a photo of some seriously scratched lenses.
Probably thinking nothing more of it, Billy would no doubt have been surprised to get a reply from the opticians saying that, if England’s talismanic captain Kane retweeted his picture of his now pretty useless specs, they would sort him out a new pair for free.
Being a top bloke, the Tottenham striker obliged, and Specsavers were as good as their word, saying on Twitter, “You, sir, have FREE GLASSES.”
Billy responded, “You lot are heroes.”
Other Twitter users were impressed with the gesture as well, with one commenter joking, “Touch of class that, from a Vision Express fan.”
Kane’s goal against Germany was his first of Euro 2020, and secured England’s first win over Germany in the knockout stages of an international tournament since 1966.
The team now face Ukraine in the quarter finals on Saturday evening in Rome. Whilst there won’t be as many England fans in the stadium due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, if Kane pops up with another vital goal, Specsavers might be getting a few more requests from over-exuberant fans who have inadvertently ruined their glasses when celebrating back home in Blighty.
The match will be live on the BBC tomorrow night (Saturday 3rd July), with coverage starting at 7pm. At least Billy will be able to see it clearly now!
