Celebrity Race Across the World star Jeff Brazier has opened up about why he chose to travel with his son Freddy, and not Bobby, for the challenging 12,500km trip.

Speaking on The One Show ahead of episode one of the popular show’s second series airing on BBC One last night (14th August), the TV star explained his reasoning behind not bringing EastEnders star Bobby with him to South America.

In Celebrity Race Across the World series two, Jeff and Freddy join three other celebrity duos as they compete to be the first to travel from Belém, Northern Brazil to Frutillar in Southern Chile – via five checkpoints – and without access to any of the luxuries and mod-cons they may usually be accustomed to.

Speaking on The One Show about choosing to take the youngest of his two sons with him on the trip, Jeff said the choice was somewhat of a “natural selection,” The Sun reports.

“[Freddie] has that staying power, that sort of stomach for challenges. So, I knew he'd be good,” he continued. “Plus, he's a quick thinker and as he just said, he takes lots of risks. I think you have to have a different way of thinking about things.”

The TV star then considered his reply and quickly added: “Poor Bob, he's going to be offended about that. Bob would've been a great teammate in so many other respects as well.”

But the opportunities Bobby has already got to enjoy as a result of his soap success – such as competing on last year’s Strictly Come Dancing – also played an important role in Jeff’s choosing Freddy for Race Across the World.

“Bob's had some wonderful experiences - I was also mindful of the fact that Freddie would really benefit from getting a big life experience under his belt. No better way than travelling somewhere afar,” he explained.

Jeff and Freddy appear to be shaping up to be early fan favourites in their race to beat the show’s other couples to the final Chillean checkpoint.

To find out who will come out on top, Celebrity Race Across the World continues every Wednesday on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm.
