Longlegs star Maika Monroe has revealed why she wasn’t allowed to see Nicolas Cage in his horrifying transformation before one pivotal moment in the horror film.

(Warning - mild Longlegs spoilers ahead!)

The upcoming thriller stars Nicolas Cage as a satanic serial killer who is being hunted by FBI agent Lee Harker (Monroe). The case becomes even more complicated when occult evidence is found, and Harker’s personal connection to the killer becomes apparent.

In an exclusive interview with virginradio.co.uk, Maika revealed director Osgood Perkins made sure to hype up the fear on set by not allowing her to see Cage’s transformation, allowing her imagination to run wild before their confrontation.

Cage takes on a totally terrifying person to fully become Longlegs, and getting that first reaction from Harker was absolutely key, according to the actress.

She explained: “The director wanted to keep us separate through all the filming. He didn't want us to meet. He didn't want me to see any of his makeup tests, photos of his makeup from the set, so it was completely a shock and completely brand new.

When Harker and Longlegs eventually meet, the reaction fans will see on screen is the “very real and raw” moment Monroe had to keep her cool. “It was pretty insane,” she added.

Discussing how Cage enveloped the life and soul Longlegs for the project, the It Follows star shared: “It was insane, it was incredible. Just from an actor's standpoint, to watch him in this performance was surreal. Obviously, I grew up watching his movies and he’s an icon. We know his voice, we know his mannerisms, we all know what he looks like.

“It was just so incredible to see him in this role, because he is completely and utterly unrecognisable. There's not an ounce of the Nic Cage that we all know in this. It was so cool to be acting opposite him, with him two feet away from me. It was one of those moments I'll never forget.”

With a wildly impressive 90% Rotten Tomatoes already at the time of writing, Longlegs is clearly a major hit with horror fans, and when asked about the incredible reaction before the movie has even dropped in cinemas, Maika admitted she was surprised to see viewers take to it so quickly.

She explained: “It's so hard for me, because, of course, I was there on set every day. It will never have the same impact on me as it does someone watching it for the first time. I knew it would be scary, but people are saying it's one of the scariest movies they've seen in a long time. That has been surprising.”

Longlegs is out in cinemas on 12th July.
