Steve Carell is back as Gru in Despicable Me 4, which lands in cinemas this Friday, 12th July.

Ahead of the film’s release, the actor spoke to Tilly and Felix from the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with webuyanycar all about his character, the film’s music, the introduction of Mega Minions and… Taylor Swift.

The fourth film in the franchise sees Gru, his wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig) and their girls welcome a new family member. Meanwhile, Gru faces a new nemesis in Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his girlfriend Valentina (Sofia Vergara).

With music playing a big part in the new film, Tilly and Felix took the opportunity to speak to The Office star about his fandom of Taylor Swift. He told them: “Now it's so commonplace. Everybody's a big fan of Taylor Swift. But yeah, I am.”

And regarding whether Gru would be a Swiftie, he said: “Who wouldn't be? I mean, honestly. Yeah, I think Gru would.”

He added: “I would love to see Gru bring his daughters to a Taylor Swift concert!”

The new film sees the Mega Minions - essentially Superhero versions of Minions - introduced for the first time. Steve said: “What makes me laugh about the Mega Minions, is that you find that, no matter what kind of superpower you give the minions, they're still minions. And they're still going to mess it up. And it isn't necessarily going to be helpful.”

When asked what Mega Steve might look like, the Evan Almighty actor said: “One of my favourite gadgets that Gru has is the freeze ray. So maybe Mega Steve is a Steve that could fly and could freeze people.

“So, I'd hover over and then freeze people in line. Because I love the idea, there was one scene in one of the movies where he freezes everybody in line in front of him at a coffee shop, so he could get his first. That's genius. To be able to go do that, I mean, who wouldn't want to do that?”

Given the fact that it was the Breakfast Show team interviewing Steve, they were interested to know what Gru's morning routine would look like. “I bet he has very good oral hygiene,” Steve said.

“Honestly, I think he really is very meticulous about brushing and flossing and using the right kind of mouthwash. And I think he likes to be fresh. And he probably exfoliates. Lucy probably has changed that part of it. You've got to take care of your skin as you're getting older.”
