Shrek fans rejoice! We finally know when the Shrek 5 will land in cinemas.

DreamWorks Animation, the company behind all four other Shrek movies, has confirmed the fifth flick will hit the big screen on 1st July 2026

Fans last caught up with Shrek and his swamp in 2010’s Shrek Forever After, and whispers of a Shrek 5 have been circulating since 2023, with the aim of bringing back the original cast for a new adventure after the end of spin-off movie Puss in Boots: The Last Wish in 2022.

The exciting update was teased on the official DreamWorks Animation X account, with a short video of Shrek-ified number 5 dancing around to Smash Mouth’s All-Star - the classic early noughties hit that kicked off the original 2001 movie.

Revealing the all-star cast’s return, the caption to the teaser read: “Not too Far, Far Away… @Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz.”

Yes all the A-listers who made their mark in the fairytale land of Duloc all those years ago, will be back for more, with Mike Myers (Shrek), Cameron Diaz (Fiona) and Eddie Murphy (Donkey) making a comeback to the voice over booth.

Fans seemed overjoyed by the release date news, with plenty sharing their love for the animated franchise in the comments.

One follower wrote: “OH WE WILL BE SEATED IN THEATRESSS,” while another said: “We’ve been waiting for 5110 days, another 722 won’t hurt.”

Donkey star Eddie recently hinted that a big reveal was on its way, telling Collider earlier this year: "We started doing Shrek, four or five months ago," the Hollywood star revealed.

He continued: “I did this, I recorded the first act, and we'll be doing it this year, we’ll finish it up.”

Eddie added: “Shrek is coming out, and Donkey's gonna have his own movie. We're gonna do Donkey as well. So we're gonna do a Shrek, and we're doing a Donkey.”

When asked whether both films were being made at the same time, the Norbit and Nutty Professor star explained: “No, not at the same time. I started recording Shrek, I think it's coming out in 2025, and we're doing a Donkey one next."

Shrek’s 2001 debut became a worldwide success after its release. Lauded for its animation and voice performances, the first Shrek film became the fourth highest-grossing film of the year, and won the very first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.

So far, three sequels have been released: the Oscar-nominated Shrek 2 in 2004, Shrek the Third in 2007, and Shrek Forever After in 2010.

A spin-off prequel, Puss in Boots, was released in 2011, while Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, which was set after the events of Shrek Forever After, was released in 2022.

Shrek 5 will be released in cinemas on 1st July 2026.
