Jonathan Groff has admitted his Doctor Who character is “not necessarily who he appears to be” amid fan rumours he might be replacing John Barrowman in the role of Captain Jack Harkness.

While there has been nothing from the official Doctor Who team to suggest the American musical theatre star is playing anything other than a “key” new character called ‘Rogue’ in the series’ next episode of the same name, that hasn’t stopped some fans becoming convinced Rogue is in fact a new iteration of Torchwood’s ever-popular character, Jack Harkness.

Reasoning behind the rumours range from fans pointing to his somewhat similar looks to the former Jack star and his American accent to his character's apparent friendly-rivalry and potential romantic chemistry with the Doctor, which can be seen in some of the show’s early trailers.

Now, in the lead up to Rogue airing this Saturday night (8th June), the BBC have released an interview with Groff in which he admits his character - though still a mystery - does have something to hide.

“Rogue is an alien bounty hunter and a man of mystery,” the former Hamilton star explained. “When we meet Rogue, and he first meets the Doctor, we’re in a Regency Era.” But, the actor teased: “Rogue is not necessarily who he appears to be when you meet him.”

In his interview, Groff also gushed about working alongside Fifteenth Doctor star Ncuti Gatwa and Ruby Sunday actress Millie Gibson. “[They] were both so warm and welcoming! Big smiles and full of laughs and embraces, they could not have been more warm,” he gushed.

“I spent most of my time with Ncuti and I am obsessed with him. I think he is such a star. He’s so unpredictable and thrilling to act with because you never see the same thing twice,” Groff added.

“He’s so spontaneous, and yet so deeply connected to what he’s doing. He really cares. He’s really in it fully, and he’s got this force and positivity that is completely unique to him. It’s just phenomenal. I just adore him. I think he is one of the most exciting actors working today.”

Doctor Who returns on BBC iPlayer and BBC One next Saturday (8th June).
