Spider-Man’s Tom Holland has made his debut in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet in London’s West End, and it’s safe to say he enjoyed the experience.

The film star plays Romeo alongside Francesca Amewudah-Rivers as Juliet in the new production of The Bard’s classic tragedy, and the actors trod the boards in the first preview at the Duke of York Theatre London on Monday (13th May).

Following the show, the British actor took to Instagram to share a photo of himself with other members of the production, writing: “Tonight was the start of something so special. I'm beyond proud of our cast and crew who have gone above and beyond in every way."

He added: “I can't wait for the rest of the run. Tonight was truly a highlight of my career and I'm so glad I get to share it with these incredible people. Love you all and see you tomorrow!"

Tom’s return to the stage comes after he revealed in September 2023 that he had been taking a break from acting to recover from some of his most recent psychologically challenging roles.

The role represents his first major theatre appearance since he debuted in Billy Elliot: The Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre in 2008.

Following the show on Monday night, videos posted on social media showed the star on the balcony of the theatre, waving, clapping and blowing kisses to a large, enthusiastic crowd below as they cheered him.

Fans also took to social media to share their delight, with one writing: “Congrats tom, so happy for you and the entire cast <3”

Another said: “What a fun new chapter of your life!”

The sold-out run of Romeo and Juliet continues at the Duke Of York’s Theatre until 3rd August.
