The next Matrix adventure has officially been confirmed, but the announcement of the fifth film has divided the loyal fan base.

Warner Bros. Pictures revealed Matrix 5 is in the works, but it will mark the first title in the franchise without Lana and Lilly Wachowski as directors.

Instead, The Martian screenwriter Drew Goddard will be at the helm as writer, producer and director, but there’s not yet been a green-light given on whether the star-studded cast will make a comeback.

Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss have starred as Neo and Trinity since the inception of the Matrix movies in 1999, alongside the likes of Laurence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving. The mind-bending movies combined futuristic sci-fi action with artificial intelligence and philosophical debate.

Fans were delighted to see the beloved series return to the big screen in 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, but this fifth flick has yet to have its full cast confirmed.

Warner Bros President of Production Jesse Ehrman said in a statement: “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honouring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.

“The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

He continued: “It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

However, it seems the news of the Matrix returning to the big screen has divided many fans, with some taking to social media to share their thoughts and feelings over Neo potentially making a comeback.

“After the fourth entry, there's absolutely no need for this. More sequels are just going to tarnish the impact of the original,” wrote one fan on X (formerly Twitter).

Another said: “The fourth one felt like an afterthought, and it damaged the foundation concept IMO. Felt like a soft reboot opening the door for nonsense add-ons.”

However, others shared their major excitement at the sequel confirmation, with one elated fan commenting: “Epic news! The Matrix just needed a new perspective.  There’s a lot of untapped potential for it as a franchise.  A new director, producer, and writer is key!”

“Yaaay! This is going to be sooo awesome!!!,” penned another.

The plot and release date for The Matrix 5 has yet to be confirmed - so watch this space!
