Hannah Waddingham has opened up about her “horrific” Game of Thrones filming experience.

Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert to promote her new film, the stunt focused The Fall Guy, the Ted Lasso star who played Septa Unella in Thrones talked about how she was “actually waterboarded” during a scene with Lena Headey’s Cersei Lannister.

“Thrones gave me something I wasn’t expecting from it,” Waddingham told Colbert, explaining: “And that is chronic claustrophobia.

“I had 10 hours - I’ve talked about it since with David Benioff and Dan Weiss the two exec producers on it,” she clarified. “And it’s a good job it’s for them, because it was horrific. 10 hours of being actually waterboarded.”

Thrones is such a- the reason why I don’t believe it’s touched yet in terms of the cinematography of it, for a series, it’s just a different level. But with that comes actual waterboarding,” she said, explaining how for the scene she was genuinely strapped to a table for realism.

Filming the scene left her with marks on her body and, as she previously explained in other interviews about the scene, quite a bit of trauma due to how uncomfortable the scene was to film.

However, referring again to how the show’s excellent standards made actors want to commit to these scenes despite their discomfort, she said: “It kind of doesn’t matter when you’re in Thrones because you just want to give the best performance.”

Waddingham’s experience with stunts on The Fall Guy was more enjoyable than Game of Thrones, however the in-demand actress did reveal she did get a little injured while filming one scene in which she threw a punch.

Showing Colbert and the audience her index finger, she said: “See all these scars? Look at my wounds!” she joked. “Fall Guy scars. That’s my badge of honour - and they gave me a cap!”

The Fall Guy is will hit cinemas in the UK on 2nd May.
