Call the Midwife’s Trixie is in for a tearful series finale from the looks of this exclusive first-look clip.

The fan-favourite character - played beautifully by original cast member Helen George - has been going through the wringer over the last couple of episodes after her husband Matthew (Olly Rix)’s financial struggles came to light and threw their comfortable plans for married life together into chaos.

In episode seven, Matthew revealed to Trixie that he planned to travel to New York to try and recover his fortunes, but Trixie - despite repeating her love for him - was unwilling to leave behind her beloved role as a Poplar-based midwife to join him.

Now, this week’s first look clip shared with virginradio.co.uk shows Trixie struggling in his absence.

Watch this week's emotional first-look clip here:

As the above clip shows, instead of joining her Nonnatus House friends and family for their bonfire night celebrations, a tearful-looking Trixie appears determined to walk away from Nonnatus House without being seen.

However, her brother Geoffrey (Christopher Harper) catches her on her way out and does his best to comfort her in her time of need.

Worryingly, however, Trixie appears unwilling to listen to his words of comfort, and still leaves the scene in an emotional state.

Telling Geoffrey “I’m not going to comment on the Prince situation,” the experienced midwife highlights her and Matthew’s current relationship limbo, a storyline which fans will doubtless be hoping receives a happy or at least hopeful conclusion before series 13 comes to an end on Sunday night (3rd March).

Details for series 13’s finale storyline are mostly being kept under wraps, although a short synopsis has been published, teasing: “Miss Higgins receives an unexpected visitor, and Sister Monica ruffles feathers. Poplar votes for its Mother of the Year.”

Call the Midwife series 13's finale airs on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Sunday, 3rd March at 8pm.
