Call the Midwife series 13 got off to a fantastic start last Sunday (7th January) after its Christmas special also impressed fans who tuned in to watch over the festive period.

Many viewers took to social media on Sunday night to share how the series opener had them near tears as a result of the emotional storyline it told with guest star Rosie Jones.

The episode also delighted fans by introducing new characters Joyce and Rosalind, played by Renee Bailey and Natalie Quarry, who have joined the series’ mainstay cast this season to play the newbie student midwives.

Series creator and writer Heidi Thomas has teased difficult times ahead for some of the show’s long-standing cast members, including Matthew and Trixie. But the programme will still also keep up its uplifting nature, as well as its role in highlighting health and social issues from the past that still have relevance to audiences today.

Call the Midwife continues on BBC One and BBC iPlayer this Sunday, 14th January, at 8pm.
