Virgin Radio’s very own Vassos Alexander was a contestant on The Weakest Link at the weekend, as part of a Radio Special.

Vassos joined fellow radio presenters Fi Glover, Rick Edwards, Dave Berry, Owain Wyn Evans, Nikita Kanda, Snoochie Shy and Vicky Hawkesworth on the popular BBC quiz show, hosted by comedy star Romesh Ranganathan.

Viewers who watched the episode, which aired on Saturday evening (6th January), saw Vassos perform well, eventually finishing runner-up to Rick Edwards.

He missed out on the win having got a music question wrong in the final “penalty shoot-out” round.

The question was: “In pop music, in 2023, which artist simultaneously topped the UK singles and albums charts with Miracle, and Higher Than Heaven respectively?”

The correct answer is Ellie Goulding, but Vassos guessed Ed Sheeran.

“To be honest, I’d get it wrong again now. If you asked me it now, I'd probably still say Ed Sheeran!” Vassos admitted, while talking about it on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with cinch this morning (8th January).

Speaking more about his experience, the sports presenter said: “It was really, really good fun. I think I did a lot of moaning about getting all of the music and radio questions.”

Meanwhile, while praising Vassos for his efforts, Chris said: “Here’s a question for everyone: how many questions can you get wrong on The Weakest Link and still come second? Answer: quite a lot!”

Indeed, Vassos did answer a few (mostly music!) questions incorrectly during the earlier rounds, but by far the most memorable wrong answer came from Vicky Hawkesworth. When asked: “Which tennis player with the first name Andre won his first Grand Slam in 1989?”, instead of saying “Agassi”, she gave the answer “The Giant”!

Vassos revealed that a whole bunch of footage got left on the cutting room floor. “The thing is, there’s quite a lot of filming around the stuff, and you sort of assume that it’s all going to go in. None of it goes in,” he said.

Explaining that they filmed for “three-and-a-half-hours”, he said that there was “a lot of Andre The Giant bants!”

When host Romesh visited the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with cinch last year, after the Radio Special had been filmed, he told Chris: “[Vassos] was worried about what was going to happen if he did badly on the show!”

Vassos said: “Rom walks on the set, turns to me at my little podium, and he says, ‘Vassos, just exactly how badly does Chris want you to do on this show?’ And I went, ‘He wants me to do very badly!’”
