Jason Sudeikis has explained how his Ted Lasso character could have been somewhat different were it not for Donald Trump.

We all know Ted Lasso as the kind-hearted, optimistic, funny and friendly football manager in the acclaimed Apple TV+ series, but it turns out that the original idea was for him to be more “belligerent”.

However, in a new interview with The Guardian, the show’s co-creator and star explained that former US president Donald Trump inspired changes to the character.

“It was the culture we were living in,” he said. “I’m not terribly active online and it even affected me. Then you have Donald Trump coming down the escalator. I was like, ‘OK, this is silly,’ and then what he unlocked in people… I hated how people weren’t listening to one another. Things became very binary and I don’t think that’s the way the world works.”

He added: “As a new parent – we had our son Otis in 2014 – it was like, ‘Boy, I don’t want to add to this.’ Yeah, I just didn’t want to portray it.”

When he recently joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with cinch, Sudeikis told Chris how he, Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard) and Joe Kelly came up with the idea of Ted back in 2013: “NBC Sports acquired the rights to show the Premier League over there in The States. They wanted to do a commercial. So they asked me if I would do it.”

He explained that they used “one sheet of paper” to “beat out ideas”. For example: “Something silly, like missing a goal, having it go over the crossbar and Ted thinking that was three points, like an American football field goal.”

The show is currently streaming on Apple TV+, and the story is set to come to a conclusion at the end of the current season, its third.

Jason told Chris: “It’s flattering that people want more.”

He added, however: “We want the story to go out because maybe people, at the end, would be like, ‘Oh you know what, that's it. Thank you. That's all we need’.

“I truly do believe that.”
