Sister Act star Whoopi Goldberg has provide fans with a positive update on the third movie in the beloved franchise.
The Hollywood star dropped the big news that the script for the third SA outing is done and dusted while on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday (29th November), much to the delight of the audience.
While discussing the avid interest in seeing Deloris, or Sister Mary Clarence, once again, Whoopi confirmed: “The script came in yesterday. I really like it but it has a whole lot of adults to go through. So, if they don't get in its way, it could actually be pretty good."
The Ghost star then invited comedian Jimmy to make a cameo, to which he responded: “Yes, are you kidding me? To be in Sister Act 3? Of course, I would do that. I would do anything for you.”
News of the follow-up to 1993’s Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit first came to light in 2020, when Disney announced they would be bringing back the franchise via Twitter, writing: “Sister Act 3 is in development! Whoopi Goldberg returns to star and produce, with Tyler Perry as producer as well. Sister Act 3 will premiere on Disney Plus."
The much-loved original 1992 Sister Act movie saw Goldberg star as lounge singer Deloris Van Cartier, who saw her boyfriend kill someone while living in Reno, Nevada, and consequently entered the witness protection program, whereby she had to pretend to be a nun named Sister Mary Clarence.
While in hiding, she turned the church’s choir around and brought life back to the community.
Back in the Habit saw Delores once again become Mary Clarence in order to teach music. The plot saw her attempt to save the school from closing down.
Whoopi reassured fans that the third movie was still in the works in October, where she revealed who her dream cast would be.
Speaking on Comedy Central’s Hell of A Week with host Charlamagne Tha God, the Oscar winner shared she’d love to have rapper Nicki Minajo on board, adding: “I’m gonna ask Keke [Palmer, star of Nope] to come. You know, I want everybody to come in. I want Lizzo to come.”
Talking more about her ideal cast, she said: “I want as many people who want to have some fun, because I really, desperately need to have some fun.”
Sister Act 3 is set to premiere on Disney+, although there is no indication of release date just yet.
