Netflix viewers are convinced they have found the best movie of 2022 on the streaming site with The Wonder starring Florence Pugh.

The psychological thriller is a period drama following the story of Elizabeth ‘Lib’ Wright (Pugh), an English nurse who has been sent to an Irish village to see a young girl called Anna (Kíla Lord Cassidy), who hasn’t eaten anything for months.

Her family claim she still has not starved and Anna says she has been sustained by “manna from heaven”.

Lib with observing the girl and getting to the bottom of the mystery along with Sister Michael (Josie Walker) who has also been ordered to watch over the girl.

Tensions are high, however, as the local community wants to believe in the miracle and there is a strong anti-English feeling in Ireland at the time following the devastation of the potato famine.

The movie has been adapted from the bestselling novel of the same name by Emma Donoughe with Sebastián Lelo at the helm as director.

It seems The Wonder has already been a big hit with Netflix users who have taken to social media to share their thoughts, with one person calling it “the best movie I have watched this year”.

Another stated it was “the best movie I’ve seen on Netflix in a long, long time.”

A third praised Pugh in the leading role and said: “Florence Pugh in The Wonder. Omg. Jaw dropped. I can watch her for hours and hours.”

A fourth added: “THE WONDER on Netflix is the perfect film to watch this holiday weekend. it’s all about eating for one! but also about religion, children, and families we are born into and choose.”

It looks like the movie has been a hit with critics as well, with a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes and many praising Pugh’s “remarkable performance”.

The Wonder is available to stream on Netflix.
