January's just got a little more darker. Christian Bale is returning to our screens and heading up an all-star cast in Netflix horror film, The Pale Blue Eye.

As the third collaboration between Christian and director Scott Cooper (2013's Out of the Furnace and 2017's Hostiles), the Academy Award winner stars as veteran detective, Augustus Landor, who's hired to investigate a grim murder with the help of a young cadet, who goes on to become the famous fiction writer Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling).

Director Cooper said about his appreciation of Poe's work: "Because my father taught English and there was lots of literature strewn about our house, Poe came into my world at a young age, and I was just fascinated with his works.

"And my father, after I directed Crazy Heart, he said, ‘There’s a novel that you should read; it’s The Pale Blue Eye and it has Edgar Allan Poe as a character at the centre of an investigation’."

The all-star cast includes Harry Melling, Gillian Anderson, Lucy Boynton, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Harry Lawtey, Toby Jones and Robert Duvall.

The official synopsis reads: "West Point, 1830. A world-weary detective is hired to discreetly investigate the gruesome murder of a cadet.

"Stymied by the cadets’ code of silence, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case — a young man the world would come to know as Edgar Allan Poe."

Here's what Bale had to say about his new movie Amsterdam and singing with Taylor Swift.

The Pale Blue Eye opens in cinemas in December and will hit Netflix on January 6.
