Will Ncuti Gatwa be returning to Sex Education following the Doctor Who announcement?

After it was revealed the actor would be taking over from Jodie Whittaker as the next Doctor Who, questions start to circulate about whether he would be returning to the hit Netflix show Sex Education as Eric Effiong for its fourth season.

This was made even more important after several other stars confirmed they would not be appearing in the upcoming series.

However, according to Variety, Gatwa will be back as the flamboyant Eric for season four.

It was announced in May this year that the actor would be stepping up as the beloved timelord to coincide with the return of showrunner Russel T Davies for a new series.

At the time it was revealed, Gatwa said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. "A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared.

"This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care. I will endeavour my upmost to do the same."

It’s set to be a busy year for Gatwa who has also landed a role alongside Sex Education co-star Emma Mackey in Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Barbie movie.

The fourth season of Sex Education was confirmed in September last year, but no release date has yet been announced.

It’s also an exciting time for Doctor Who fans as it was revealed that David Tennant and Catherine Tate would be returning for a special 60th anniversary episode.

How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris is also jumping on board for the anniversary special along with Hearstopper’s Yasmin Finney, who will be playing the character of Rose.

Doctor Who's next special premieres in Autumn 2022 on BBC One.
