Eagle-eyed fans believe they have spotted an easter egg in the new trailer for Avatar: The Way of Water that hints at the return of a dead character from the original film.

In the 2009 film, Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), the head of human security force, turns out to be the baddie after he destroys the sacred Na’vi hometree murdering several Na’vi in the process.

At the end of the film, he is killed by Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) just as he was about to murder Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), and that was the end of that…or so we thought.

It has been speculated that Lang would actually be returning for the sequel- despite his character being killed off- as an entirely new character or perhaps a clone of himself.

While no details have been revealed yet, eagle-eyed viewers believe they have spotted a clue in the new trailer that confirms this theory.

At one point, we see a blue-skinned Na’vi that bears a striking resemblance to Lang’s character. Not only that, but the Na’vi has the same eagle tattoo on his arm that Quaritch had in the first movie.

We’re not sure exactly what this means, but either the Colonel has come back from the dead, his avatar has found a life of its own, or someone else is using it!

The new trailer confirms that Jack Sully and Neytiri will be returning for the sequel, and according to director James Cameron the movie will “test the limits of what cinema can do”.

We were first introduced to the world of Pandora 13 years ago, and it quickly became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, earning a whopping $2.8 billion at the box office.

Plans for a sequel to the original film started all the way back in 2012, and filming only started in 2017- so it’s fair to say it’s been a while in the making.

The Way of Water is set around 14 years after the first movie and will centre around Jake, who has settled down with Neytiri and their pre-teen children.
