The BBC One adaptation continued last night and saw junior doctor Adam (Ben Whishaw) dealing with the aftermath of a stressful operation.

Viewers of the show, based on Adam Kay’s book of the same name, were full of praise for the second episode and took to Twitter to share their thoughts.

One person called it: “A perfect mix of humour and trauma depicting the massive strain on NHS staff- so well acted by Ben Whishaw. How scary to expect medical staff to function under such strain…”

Another said: “am just catching up with episode 2 of this is going to hurt...One of my favourite stories from your book made it to the tv adaptation... the degloving story 🤭🤭🤭”

A third said: “I think #ThisIsGoingToHurt is one of the best portrayals of our NHS I have ever seen. Many congratulations to all involved.”

In the second installment of the series, Adam is dealing with the consequences of choosing to operate on a patient complaining of abdominal pains, despite being told to send her home by Mr Lockhart, the chief consultant.

Adam was right to operate in the end and saved the patient’s ovary. However, he lands himself in trouble again after a patient with a 25-week C-section decided to complain.

The series is set in a labour ward but, as reported by Hello!, the majority of the hospital scenes were not filmed in a hospital at all, but on a custom-built set.

Even if the set is not real, the stories on screen certainly are. This is Going to Hurt is based on the experiences of Adam Kay, who worked on an Obstetrics and Gynaecology ward for more than six years.

He kept a diary while working in the hospital between 2004 and 2010, and decided to write a memoir based on the time he spent there.

This Is Going To Hurt continues on 22 February at 9pm on BBC One, or you can binge-watch all episodes on BBC iPlayer now.
