New film about the 1990s Beanie Baby craze will look back at the absurdity of it all

Remember the 90s? Some would say it was a simpler time, but it also saw many a consumer craze, one of them being the Beanie Baby mania, and now Apple TV is making a film about it.

The Beanie Baby craze was a bit of a wild one, with prices for limited edition versions of plush toys soaring and literal fistfights breaking out in retailers as people tried to get their hands on the latest release.

It also brought a lot of people joy, but the latest film from Apple TV won’t be a celebration of the fad but more of a look back at the absurdity of the plush toy and the industry as a whole.

Kristen Gore will be adapting the script from a book by Zac Bissonnette titled ‘The Great Beanie Baby Obsession: Mass Delusions And The Dark Side Of Cute.

That title really says it all, doesn’t it?

Kirsten has also been a writer on Futurama and Saturday Night Live, so we can expect a little bit of humour in this one, at least.

Apple’s film is set to be a fictionalized version of events starring Zach Galifianakis, Elizabeth Banks, Sarah Snook and Geraldine Viswanathan. It will also be a celebration of the businesswomen who helped to make the company, Ty Warner, such a massive success.

As of yet, there is no hint of a release date for the film, but we will keep our eyes peeled.

This news comes after the release of HBO Max’s documentary, Beanie Mania, which analysed the cultural obsession and the people who partook in it.

The documentary gives some context to the fad and does a good job of breaking down how exactly it became such a phenomenon in the first place.
