It’s not long until we see Robert Pattinson unveiled as the Caped Crusader, and now we know a bit more about the villains he’ll face in The Batman.

Ahead of its 4th March release, Warner Bros. has released two new images of Colin Farrell as The Penguin, and Paul Dano as Riddler, and both iconic characters look very different from what comic book fans are used to.

Riddler was famously portrayed by Jim Carrey in the 1995 big-screen adventure Batman Forever, complete with neon-green catsuit and bright red hair.

In these newly released images, Paul’s Riddler takes on a much more sinister look, with a leather-looking mask covering his face with a dark jacket to match, but still with the iconic question mark adorned on the front of his outfit.

It’s a similar story for The Penguin, or Oswald Cobblepot, who looks ever the mob boss as he dons a purple and black suit jacket and bow tie.  It's a big difference from Danny DeVito’s take on the character, which included a prosthetic nose/beak and extremely pale complexion.

Paul recently explained what he loved about the costumes, which appeared more home-made than some of his predecessor’s unforgettable outfits.

He told Empire back in December: “I think the potential DIY element you’re talking about was actually scarier to me than the more sophisticated or composed designs we might have played with.

“I found working with the costume to be very powerful. When you put on something like that, there’s a way to let it speak to you, and tell your body something. There’s a way to let it have a life of its own.”

The Batman is the first film in a new imagining of the DC hero. The story begins with Batman having spent two years stalking the streets and striking fear into the hearts of criminals. Bruce Wayne’s alter-ego finds himself getting deeper and deeper into the shadows of Gotham City.

The latest trailer for the action-packed flick came out back in December, and showed Bruce teaming up with Selina Kyle, who is also Catwoman (played by Zoë Kravitz). When it becomes clear that Batman needs to forge new relationships, in order to unmask the culprit and bring justice to Gotham City, he must join forces with Kravitz’s character.

As well as Pattinson, Farrell, Kravitz and Dano, The Batman will feature Barry Keoghan, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, and Peter Sarsgaard, the latter of which plays Alfred, Bruce Wayne's faithful butler.

The Batman, which is directed by Matt Reeves, will be released nationwide on 4th March 2022 by Warner Bros. Pictures.
