If you’re anything like us, you often find yourself spending far too long searching for a good film, only to give up and just watch Friends repeats for the millionth time instead. So here’s an underrated gem to bear in mind next time you fancy a movie night.

Released last year, Black Box is a science fiction thriller which dips its toe firmly into the horror genre. If you’re a fan of Netflix’s dystopian Black Mirror, then you’ll want to give it a look.

The narrative focuses on Nolan Wright (played by Mamoudou Athie), who suffers from amnesia after waking from a coma following a car accident. He is assisted by his ten-year-old daughter, Ava, played by the excellent Amanda Christine, who helps to remind her dad who he is, leaves him handy post-it notes to help him with his day-to-day tasks, and essentially holds the family together.

As the trailer for the movie shows, an experimental therapy becomes available, which involves a combination of hypnosis and the titular black box, which is kind of like a VR headset. The process takes our protagonist into the deepest corners of his memories.

As you can expect, things don’t go especially smoothly.

Here’s the trailer for the movie, which was helmed by debut director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour Jr.

Commenters on YouTube were quick to praise the film. One person said: “It was a brilliant movie. I generally don't even care to spend my time writing reviews, but I truly thought this whole crew deserved a huge appreciation for what a spectacular work they've done.”

Another added: “A really good and original movie!! The whole cast was fantastic, especially little Ava.”

Someone else wrote: “This movie has me tuned in with no bathroom or snack breaks,” which feels like the ultimate recommendation to us.

Black Box is available now on Amazon Prime Video.
