Ridley Scott has just made fans even more excited for the release of Gladiator 2 after claiming it is the “best thing [he’s] ever made”.
The sequel picks up in the years after the original story, which saw Maximus (Russel Crowe) sold into slavery after his family was murdered before fighting his way up the ranks to get revenge against the emperor who destroyed his life.
Normal People star Paul Mescal plays Lucius in the new film, the youngest son of Lucilla from the first film, played again by Connie Nielsen. Fast forward a few years, and Lucius is now living in Numidia, North Africa, where his mother sent him to keep him out of the Empire’s reach. He’s then forced to fight in the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors.

The film certainly has a lot to live up to and many fans of the original have been worried the sequel might tarnish its legacy.
However, if Scott’s words are anything to go by, they have nothing to worry about.
“It’s the best thing I’ve ever made,” he told Empire magazine. The director quickly backtracked and clarified: “One of the best things. I’ve made a few good ‘uns.”
Hinting at what fans can expect from the sequel, Scott also added: “It’s full-bore, brutal action.”
Last month, we also caught up with Gladiator star Fred Hechinger, who will be playing Emperor Caracalla in the new movie, who shared some teasers of what is to come.
Speaking exclusively to virginradio.co.uk, he said: “It’s one of the wildest movies ever. Ridley’s on top form and is unafraid of anything.”
The actor added: “I don’t know what I can tell you, but what I can tell you is you’ll think, ‘that is so crazy’, and then there’ll be more things that shock you. The trailer is just the beginning of this thing.”
