Idris Elba has once again hinted that he will be returning to the role of Luther at some point in the near future.

Luther: The Fallen Sun was released on Netflix over a year ago and it was a huge hit with viewers, who are hoping a following up will be coming soon.

In a new interview with Radio Times, Elba has hinted that may well be the case and he’s ready to reprise the role.

He told the publication: “The coat is still waiting. Luther is my legacy project. It’s the character I’ve played the longest in my life; there are definitely still things I want him to do.”

This comes after the actor told Collider that he was hoping to make another film

He said: “Luther ended up being one of the top five most streamed films on Netflix, which is an incredible achievement, since it was the first film from the television show. I’m hoping to make another one.”

He continued: “I love Luther. I love that character, and I love where I can possibly take him, as a story and as a character. So, yeah, keep your fingers crossed.”

When promoting Luther: The Fallen Sun, creator Neil Cross said there would be no season six but he didn’t say anything about the possibility of another film.

He told Australia's Insider magazine: “Idris, [director] Jamie Payne, and I will shortly have some exciting news to share. There’s gonna be more later, but it’s not going to be season six.”

There is definitely scope for another film, too.

In The Fallen Sun, disgraced detective John Luther is stuck behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath (Andy Serkis) who continues to taunt him, Luther breaks out of prison to finish the job.

Luther does end up apprehending the villain, but finds himself back behind bars. However, right before the credits, he is offered a mysterious job by an MI5 agent.
