Anthony Horowitz has released a new book in the Alex Rider series, Nightshade Revenge, and has shared what fans can expect from the teenage spy’s latest mission.

The bestselling author joined the Graham Norton Show with Waitrose this morning to talk about his latest release and the thrilling challenges Alex must face.

Nightshade Revenge follows the spy who has unfinished business with a deadly assassin group. The deadly plot involves augmented reality and a revolutionary new gaming system where nothing is real, but the game could kill you.

Speaking about the new novel, Anthony said: “It was an idea I had a couple of years ago, and it was in the last Alex Rider book and it was an idea of this organisation who have kidnapped a great number of young children at the ages of four or five and then indoctrinated them and brought them up to become assassin, terrorist killers.”

He added: “We try not to get too close to any sort of reality in these books. They are meant to be escapist.”

The first Alex Rider book came out in 2000, and Anthony reflected on how it has grown since then.

The author explained: “I think it's interesting because what's more difficult is that there is now a whole generation of people who have grown up boys and girls who were eight and nine and 10 years old when they read Stonebreaker they're now sort of in their 20s and 30s. I meet so many of them who still buy these books because it reminds them of the books they used to enjoy, and the books have become more adult. I have to cater to them to a certain extent.”

Alex Rider: Nightshade Revenge is out in hardback now.
