Chris Evans and Piers Morgan

Piers Morgan joined the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky to talk about the Conservative leadership race, the Wimbledon men's final, and which Hollywood star he is speaking to tonight.

The broadcaster, journalist and writer’s show, Piers Morgan: Uncensored, airs weeknights at 8pm on TalkTV. Speaking to Chris about the big talking point of the last few days, as the battle to become the next Prime Minister began, Piers said: “A bizarre week in many ways. What is even more bizarre is that the guy who got turfed out after 60 of his own ministers said they no longer had confidence in him remains Prime Minister, and might do for several more months. Which is, to me, one of the most inexplicable parts of the whole thing.”

Discussing one of the candidates who has thrown his hat in the ring, Tom Tugendhat, Piers said: “You look at this runners and riders list - a lot of them are very predictable, a lot of them are attached to the old regime, Tugendhat is a completely fresh face in all this, and I would not underestimate him.”

Speaking about Tugendhat, and Sir Keir Starmer, who was also a guest on the Chris Evans Breakfast Show with Sky show this morning, Piers said: “They have a respect for the office that they hold, and I think that comes from the previous jobs that they’ve had, because I think one of the problems that I had with Boris Johnson, he had such a cavalier attitude, not just to the truth but also to the integrity of the position that he held. He just didn’t seem to care what was going on, and Partygate, for me, completely personified this attitude.

“So whoever wins this contest, and whether it’s that winner or Keir Starmer after the next election, I just hope that we do get back to old fashioned respect for the office, because I think that’s what the public are crying out for.”

Piers continued: “We are facing an unbelievably tough time. This financial crisis is going to get a lot worse before it gets better, the Ukraine war is going to be increasingly devastating in terms of energy and food for the rest of the world, never mind what’s happening to the Ukrainian people. The pandemic is not over either. This is an almost unprecedented triple whammy of challenges, and what we do need are serious people. We need serious-minded people who are going to take the job seriously and try and sort these problems out. I think we’re done now with the party boys and girls.”

Piers Morgan: Uncensored had extended shows throughout the week, following the resignations from government. He told Chris: “It was actually good fun. It reminded me of when I was at CNN, sometimes we’d have whole days of it on the big breaking news. I love breaking news. It’s what I live for really.”

Whilst there has been a lot of politics featured on the show in recent days, the host told Chris that viewers can expect something different this evening (11th July). “Tonight we have a slight gear change,” he said. “We have the great Mickey Rourke, live and uncensored from Hollywood. He’s one of my favourite interviewees, mainly because he has no idea what he’s going to be talking about, and so you don’t either. So it’s a real freewheeling rollercoaster.”

During their chat, Chris and Piers discussed yesterday’s men’s final at Wimbledon between Novak Djokovic and Nick Kyrgios with Piers saying of the latter: “There’s absolutely no doubt that he’s unbelievably talented.

“In the first set he was devastating. He kept his temper, he managed to destroy Djokovic with his serve. It was incredible to watch. But then he just lost his mind. And there’s something quite bizarre, isn’t there, about watching a guy, who every time he lost a few points, he didn’t blame himself for bad shots, he looked up at the little row of seats which included his girlfriend, his sister, his dad and his manager, and abused them, for his own incompetence, and apparently it was all their fault for not making enough noise.”

He added: “I went from a position of thinking I’d quietly root for him, as he’s so compelling and so entertaining and so McEnroe like. And then, by the end, he’d managed to achieve the impossible, where I was actually rooting for Djokovic!”
