Ricky Wilson on Kaiser Chiefs’ debut album Employment turning 18: ‘I don’t think I’ve changed too much’

Can you believe that Kaiser Chiefs’ first album, Employment, was released 18 years ago? 

The record came out on 7th March 2005, and was packed with pure belters, including I Predict a Riot, Modern Way, Everyday I Love You Less and Less, Na Na Na Na Naa, Oh My God, Born to Be a Dancer and more.

As well as being Kaiser Chiefs' frontman, Ricky Wilson is, of course, Virgin Radio’s Drivetime presenter, and he has spoken on air about the band's anniversary. “Today is a big day in my life. It’s 18 years ago today that Kaiser Chiefs brought out their first album, Employment,” he told listeners yesterday (7th March). “Now, that was the start of my employment.”

The album landed at number three in the UK Albums Chart upon its release, and then made its way to number two almost a year later, after the band won Best British Rock Act, Best British Live Act and Best British Group at the BRIT Awards in 2006. “Six million albums sold worldwide, that’s pretty good,” Ricky said. 

The album was also shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, and acted as the springboard for the band’s huge success, which has carried on to this day. Kaiser Chiefs have released six more albums so far, and continue to perform massive gigs and festivals.

Talking about how much he has or hasn’t changed over the past 18 years, the Virgin Radio presenter said: “I mean, I don’t think I’ve changed too much. I do get a Hello Fresh box, and I brush my teeth at least twice a day, but apart from that, I haven’t changed at all. I promise you that!”

Introducing one of the tunes from Employment, he said: “I am on the radio though, so I get the chance to play this song. It’s called Everyday I Love You Less and Less, and it’s been out for 18 years, so by now I must hate her!”
