Imagine having a wander around the shops, checking out the Christmas window displays, and seeing none other than music icon Sir Elton John performing. Well, if you’d have been in New York this week, that could have happened to you!
The legendary singer, his husband David Furnish and their two children unveiled a famous Christmas display at the Saks Fifth Avenue window display.
Just two days after the Rocket Man played the final US performance of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, he appeared on a temporary stage at the world-famous luxury department store to give a live rendition of his hit single, Your Song.
The one-song performance was the main event at the store’s holiday window unveiling, which traditionally attracts millions of tourists across every festive period. The area was closed between 49th and 50th Streets while the star played to VIP guests and passers-by.
Speaking to the massed crowds before playing, Sir Elton said: “It means a great deal to me to have your support."
He added: “Thank you so much, I'm so thrilled to kick off the holiday season tonight and to be a part of this spectacular and iconic window unveiling and light show.”
At the song’s conclusion, fireworks were let off, and the musician was joined by his husband and kids.
The festive teaming-up of the singer and Saks represented the start of a partnership to benefit the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Rocket Fund. In a statement, Sir Elton said: “I’m excited to collaborate with an iconic brand like Saks that is going the extra mile to make this world a brighter, more accepting place this holiday season and beyond.”
The statement continued: “While it’s the happiest time of the year for many, we mustn’t forget about the billions of people around the world for whom safety, respect and dignity are not guaranteed. Saks’ generous support of the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s Rocket Fund will help fuel our programs to bring an end to the stigma and discrimination that prevent so many people from accessing compassionate and life-saving HIV care.”
