Lewis Capaldi's hit has been given the crown for the UK's most streamed song of all time and he has taken down Ed Sheeran on the way to the top of the pops.

The Scottish musician's 2018 smash single Someone You Loved has overtaken Sheeran's 2017 track Shape Of You to the top music spot with over 562 million streams.

The Before You Go singer, who is set for a huge 2023 world tour, told the BBC: "Listen… The Beatles, Drake, Metallica, The Eagles, Michael Jackson, don't worry guys, no hard feelings, I just had to take this one.

"Take a step back and let Daddy steer the ship now, OK?"

Capaldi said about his fellow musician and friend: "Ed's a man who is like a brother to me, he's been a mentor, he's put his arm around me and said, 'Don't worry everything's going to be ok'.

"He's been nothing but kind and gracious and beautiful, a good friend in an ever-changing industry. So to Ed I say... nice guys finish last. You snooze, you lose, kiddo. Keep up!"

Posing with an inflatable crown and his trophy on Instagram, he wrote: "Just heard that Someone You Loved is officially the MOST STREAMED SONG OF ALL TIME in the UK.

"Will never cease to amaze me, thanks so much team."

Official Charts commented: "70 years ago today the first Official Singles Chart was published. We now have a new king."

Sheeran's 2017 hit Shape Of You now sits in second place in the list, while his 2017 hit Perfect is in third place, followed by Geortge Ezra's Shotgun (4th), and Tones and I's Dance Monkey (5th).

Number six in The Weeknd's Blinding Lights, followed by The Killers' Mr Brightside (7th, Baby Shark by Pinkfong (8th), Luis Fonsi's Despacito (Remix) (9th) and Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's Shallow (10th).
