The singer has been described as a “one-of-a-kind” after being announced as the recipient of this year’s Polar Music Prize.

Music icon and former frontman of the Stooges will collect the award at the ceremony, which takes place in Stockholm on 24 May 2022.

The official video announcing the winner of the prize described Pop as a “one-of-a-kind” artist and praised his “poetic lyrics and provocative stage presence.”

The voiceover added: “He is considered the godfather of punk music”.

After receiving the news, Iggy Pop said: “I was aware of the very fine range of people that have gotten the Polar Music Prize. Patti Smith…also Metallica, a really great band. And Steve Reich […] so many other.

“So yeah, it’s a nice step for me. I respect it, and I’m honoured by it. I’m looking forward to coming to Stockholm in May to receive the Polar Music Prize.”

Polar Music Prize organisers also said the singer had paved the way for other significant punk and post-punk artists such as the Sex Pistols, Blondie, Joy Division and The Ramones.

Since it began in 1992, The Polar Music Prize has honoured two Laureates every year. Receiving the award for classical music this year alongside Iggy will be French contemporary ensemble, Ensemble Intercontemporain.

Marie Ledin, managing director of the Polar Music Prize, said: “We are delighted to return in 2022, after a two-year absence due to the pandemic, with two incredibly worthy Laureates.

“Iggy Pop is unique, there is no one else quite like him.”
