Ronnie Spector special to air on BBC Four as tributes pour in for the iconic singer

Following the death of Ronnie Spector, the leader of The Ronettes, BBC Four has altered its Friday night schedule to show a programme called Ronnie Spector At The BBC.

The legendary singer died on Wednesday, January 12th at the age of 78. In a statement, her family said: “Our beloved earth angel, Ronnie, peacefully left this world today after a brief battle with cancer. She was with family and in the arms of her husband, Jonathan.” 

The BBC Four show, which will air at 9pm tonight (Friday, January 14th), will dive back into the archives to relive some classic performances. Across half-an-hour, it will include Later… With Jools Holland, The Old Grey Whistle Test, and her most recent turn at Glastonbury Festival in 2016.

Among The Ronettes’ hits were Be My Baby, Walking in the Rain, and Baby, I Love You.

The BBC show’s press release says: “This journey through the archives features Ronnie in her own words, discussing her life and career through the years.”

Tributes have poured in since Spector’s passing. 

The official Beatles Twitter account wrote: “RIP Ronnie Spector. The Ronettes met the Beatles in early 1964 in London, and later supported the band on their US 1966 tour. Their friendship lasted and their musical paths crossed many times.”

Brian Wilson from The Beach Boys said: “I just heard the news about Ronnie Spector and I don’t know what to say. I loved her voice so much and she was a very special person and a dear friend. This just breaks my heart. Ronnie’s music and spirit will live forever.”

Spider-Man and Euphoria star, Zendaya, who is set to portray Spector in an upcoming biopic, wrote on Instagram: “Ronnie, being able to know you has been one of the greatest honors of my life. Thank you for sharing your life with me, I could listen to your stories for hours and hours. Thank you for your unmeasured talent, your unwavering love for performing, your strength, resilience and your grace.”

The actor added: “Rest in great power Ronnie. I hope to make you proud.”

The late artist’s family have confirmed that a “celebration of Ronnie’s life and music will be announced in the future.” 

They said in a statement: “Ronnie lived her life with a twinkle in her eye, a spunky attitude, a wicked sense of humor and a smile on her face. She was filled with love and gratitude.

“Her joyful sound, playful nature and magical presence will live on in all who knew, heard or saw her.”
