The thought of playing Christmas songs leaves us somewhat nauseous, but fret not, we still have time. The masters of music are teaming up to make a trio of festive songs, the first of which is set to be released at the beginning of the mega-spending month.

Sir Elton and the singer have come up with the mockingly titled Merry Christmas following the release of Ed's fourth solo studio album last week. Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show, he said: “The music video that we’re doing, I’ve chosen the eight best, most classic British Christmas number ones and we’re going to parody them.

“I don’t know if we’ve got the rights, I’m trying to get Elton to dress up as The Snowman and me be the little boy.

“We’re going to be East 17 I think, and David Bowie, we’re going to try and do the Last Christmas thing.”

He explained that the passing of his friend Michael Gudinski earlier this year had made him want to seize every day and never look back. He said: “Why am I putting this off? Tomorrow isn’t promised."

On their yuletide song, he said: “It hits everything you want in a Christmas song… I’d send mixes to Elton and he’d ring up and say, ‘More f*****g sleigh bells!’”

On spending Christmas with his daughter, he added: “Last Christmas was fun having our first Christmas together but she definitely was a blob. This one will be fun.

“I really want to get to the point, my friends all find my daughter cute, I can send Christmas cards and fill them up with glitter and say they’re from her to p**s them off. People do it to me.”

Catch The Jonathan Ross Show on Saturday at 9.30pm on ITV and ITV Hub.
