Sir Rod Stewart has revealed he doesn’t think he knows a single Ed Sheeran song while brutally dismissing the ‘Shape of You’ singer.

Despite Sheeran being the singer-songwriter behind some of the last couple of decades' biggest hits such as 'The A Team', 'Thinking Out Loud' and 'Perfect', it appears the MBE holder has failed to make a good impression on Sir Rod.

Speaking with The Times, Stewart was brought onto the topic of Sheeran while discussing the future of the current music industry.

Asked which artists he thinks are making timeless songs that will outlast their popularity today, Stewart responded: “I like whatshisname,” realising embarrassedly that he couldn’t recall the artist on his mind’s name.

“He’s British, really talented and his songs will be around,” the ‘Maggie May’ singer continued, leading the interviewer to ask him if he was referring to Ed Sheeran. But Rod’s brutal reply to this suggestion made it obvious he wasn’t.

“No, not Ed, I don’t know any of his songs, old ginger b******s. Jesus,” he said, before singing some of George Ezra’s ‘Shotgun’ to reveal it was Ezra he had on his mind.

“I think he writes really tremendous songs. He’ll be around for quite a while,” he added, having confirmed the singer who he was referring to.

Reflecting on how much the music industry has changed since he was starting out in his career, Stewart shared during his interview: “More people want to do it and fewer people are able to do it.

“We were brave in those days to go into the music business,” he added. “We didn’t know where it would take us but record companies were different. They would give you a try. Also, the people I came up with - the Stones, Elton - we all came into it because we loved the music.

“Money and fame didn’t factor - it was a burning ambition to sing. That may have changed. Now it’s more, ‘Ooh, let’s have a go at music. I don’t even have to play well. Maybe I’ll get rich.’ Fame comes before everything. All kids want is fame.”
