Ed Sheeran has shared his complete shock at waking up to discover he and the Ted Lasso team won an award at last night's Creative Arts Emmys.
The 75th edition of the Primetime Creative Arts Emmy awards ceremony, which was this year held over the evenings of the 6th and 7th of January, always takes place ahead of the Primetime Emmy Awards.
Ed and his collaborators Foy Vance and Max Martin took home the Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics award for their work on the song ‘A Beautiful Game’ for the final episode of the popular Apple TV+ show, ‘So Long, Farewell’. In winning the award, the trio beat fellow Ted Lasso musical stars Sam Ryder, Tom How and Jamie Hartman for their work on the music in the episodes ‘Mom City’ and ‘Fought & Lost’.
“We won an Emmy last night. I was not expecting to win at all, it was a real real surprise waking up to the news,” Ed wrote on Instagram after receiving news of the group’s win. “I wish I had been there but I’m just about to kick off the Asia tour so had to be elsewhere sadly.”
Describing his, Max and Foy’s work on the song, he continued: “We were all fans of the show and got asked to do a song for the finale, so 2 years ago this month we got in together and wrote a song about love and football, and how it is always about the journey rather than the destination…
“It was up against some fantastic artists and songs in its Emmy category for Best Original Music and Lyrics, hence not thinking we had a chance in hell of winning,” he added: “But thank you so much for whoever voted for it, and to Max, Foy and all the Lasso crew. I really am honoured.”
Ted Lasso’s Sam Richardson also took home an award for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series, although elsewhere the show - which received a total of 13 nominations (several in the same categories) - lost out to others including Netflix’s Wednesday and Disney+/FX’s The Bear, the latter of which also won big at last night’s Golden Globes awards.
Ted Lasso’s somewhat real-life counterpart series Welcome to Wrexham, which documents Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s continued time as the managers of Wales’ Wrexham FC, also won big at the awards show.
The Disney+/FX show took home the Creative Arts Emmys for Outstanding Unstructured Reality Program, Outstanding Cinematography for a Reality Program, Outstanding Directing for a Reality Program, Outstanding Picture Editing for an Unstructured Reality Program and Outstanding Sound Mixing for a Reality Program (single or multi-camera).
Ted Lasso is available to stream now on Apple TV+. ‘The Beautiful Game’ is available on all platforms.
Welcome to Wrexham is available to stream on Disney+.
