Just a couple of weeks before he is due to play two huge homecoming shows, Sam Fender has been forced to cancel a gig in Italy on doctor’s orders.

The singer-songwriter, who is set to play at St James' Park - home of his beloved Newcastle United - on 9th and 10th June, had to pull out of a show in Milan on Tuesday night (23rd May).

The artist took to social media to break the news to his Italy-based fans and to express how "devastated" he was.

Posting a statement on his Instagram stories, he said: “So sorry not to be able to play for you tonight Milan.

"I've just been told not to perform by my doctor due to illness. I'm truly devastated and can't apologise enough to everyone who bought a ticket and travelled to see me and the boys. I hope I can make it up to you."

The venue in Milan, Fabrique Milano, also posted in Instagram, writing: “Unfortunately, we are really sorry to say the show tonight has been cancelled as Sam is unwell. Further information on tickets to follow.”

The Geordie musician supported his hero Bruce Springsteen last week in Italy, warming up the crowd for The Boss in Ferrara and again in Rome. He described it on Instagram as “incredible” and “a dream”.

Along with the two upcoming sold-out shows at the home of his favourite footy team, Sam is also due to perform in Belfast, Dublin and Glasgow this summer, before heading off for gigs in Australia and Europe.

He is also headlining Reading and Leeds Festivals in August. The impressive bill includes Lewis Capaldi, Foals, Billie Eilish, The Killers, Imagine Dragons, and West Leg.
