The song they picked to play? 'My Hero', obviously.
On March 25th, 2022, fans of the Foo Fighters around the world commemorated the one-year anniversary of the passing of Taylor Hawkins, the band's celebrated drummer.
In honor of Hawkins, Black Box Revelation, a Belgian band, organized a moving tribute to the late drummer at the Sportpaleis stadium in Antwerp, Belgium. The venue was particularly meaningful as it was the same location where Hawkins had played his final Belgian show in 2018. The tribute was a stirring performance of the Foo Fighters' hit song 'My Hero', featuring 100 drummers dressed in black t-shirts with a silhouette of a hawk, a nod to Hawkins' nickname.
The performance began with Dries Van Dijck, the drummer for Black Box Revelation, playing the song's intro. Then, the 100 additional drummers joined in, playing together in a thunderous and unified rhythm.
'My Hero', which was originally released as a single from the Foo Fighters' second album, The Colour and the Shape, is known for its double-drum intro, which was played by Dave Grohl during the recording process. Although Hawkins wasn't in the band during this time, the song has become closely associated with him since his passing, particularly due to his son Shane's emotional performance of the song at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concerts last year.
Black Box Revelation shared a statement about the tribute, saying, "Taylor Hawkins was the best drummer of our times. Honouring him with this tribute was an experience we will never forget."
As for the future of the Foo Fighters, the band is scheduled to play at several festivals during the summer. However, they have not yet announced who will be taking over drumming duties in Hawkins' absence. Watch this space, as they say.
